8 of the cities in the Lower LA River are in the top 100 densest cities in the US.
715,000 people live within a half mile of the LA River, and more than 1 million people live within 1 mile of the LA River. We have started to plot the large and small scale open space adjacent to the river for its entire length to understand where the gaps are. In the next phase we will study the spacing of current open space in relation to the distribution of the population along the LA River, to further refine priority areas in need of open space.
As we spent time in the river’s lower reaches, we realized there is another area to pursue. There is a large amount of underutilized space in these areas in the form of utility and rail ROW’s. We are quantifying these areas, to show potential impact.
